Membership in the Massachusetts Thoracic Society

Categories of Membership

The membership of the Massachusetts Thoracic Society consists of active, honorary, and senior members.

Active Members: Any physician, scientist, nurse, respiratory therapist, physical therapist, or other qualified health professional having an interest in respiratory diseases is eligible to be a candidate for active membership in the Society. Active members have the privileges of voting and holding office, and are required to pay annual dues of $40 per year. All terms of membership run from July 1st to June 30th.

Honorary Members: Honorary membership may be bestowed upon any individual by the Council. Honorary members shall enjoy all the privileges of active membership in the Society, except for voting and holding office. No dues shall be required of honorary members.

Senior Members: Any active or honorary member who is age 65 or over and has belonged to the Society for at least ten years in the aggregate shall become a senior member upon requesting the status of senior member by written notice to the Secretary-Treasurer. Senior members shall enjoy all the privileges of active membership in the Society, except for voting and holding office. No dues shall be required of senior members. Persons who do not meet the above qualifications may be elected as senior members by the Council.

Benefits of membership in the Massachusetts Thoracic Society include:

  • Subscription to American Lung Association newsletter.
  • Discounted registration fee to attend the MTS Annual Meeting, where significant findings of scientific investigations, as well as sessions of interest to clinicians, are presented.
  • Earn CME, CEU, and CRCE credits and receive discounts off the registration fee for MTS/American Lung Association continuing medical education programs and other events.
  • Influence on allocation of American Lung Association research dollars in the fields of pulmonary and critical care medicine.
  • A voice in policy through participation in the American Lung Association's e-advocacy network.
  • Access to the MTS Membership Roster, which provides members with a source for locating their colleagues.
  • Participation in MTS Speakers Bureau.
  • Involvement in MTS committees (such as Professional Education and Research Allocations), special-interest groups that provide a venue for members to join other leaders in their fields to discuss and review common areas of interest.
  • Opportunity to contribute to efforts of the American Lung Association toward the prevention and control of lung disease.
  • Opportunity to post job listings on the MTS website.

  • Nursing Practice Committee for RNs, NPs, RRTs, PTs, Pas
  • Chadwick Medal Committee
  • Represent MTS on Massachusetts Medical Society Committees
  • MTS Scientific Award
  • Research Allocations Committee
  • Supports the Edward J. Welch Memorial Research Fund
  • Century Society
